    Stand on the Line

Sometimes there is synthesis of news items that makes sense – but not for the reasons that you would expect.

A new system being tested by Homeland Security called Future Attribute Screening Technologies (FAST) – is sort of a remote and non-invasive polygraph that allows screening for “nervous or evasive or those with deceptive intent ” at distances up to a few hundred feet. Observing pulse and breathing rates, and adding in visual clues, it claimed 78% accuracy in tests of volunteers for the screening. Even if they have not done anything, there is “evidence” they might be thinking about doing something.

Aside from a spooky Minority Report feel, the system has several very useful characteristics: It’s portable – more or less in a trailer sort of assembly that can be taken to sporting events. But, as Bruce Schnier points out that often times the surrounding “security theatre” is as important as the technical functionality or lack thereof.

The most valuable bit of information comes from the TSA rep observes your involuntary reaction when told to “stand on the line” motions you forward and then waves a pause. That’s the real detector. The rest is the window dressing to make you feel comfortable.

Bill Maher raised the real question in a recent panel discussion on risk, panic and what is worth saving. How much theatre or panic reaction to events will we permit until real damage is done? Sometimes freedom requires risks that the false assurance of theatre are useful. And sometimes the fatal decision is caused when you stand on the line.
