Maybe We Want Comcast to Throttle Traffic
As much as we chafe at the idea of Comcast or anyone else applying bandwidth caps or throttling, there is the other side of the issue that deserves some thought – ISP responsibilities in Pandemic or National Emergency. As Networkworld commented – this past week we have seen how quickly a situation can emerge in one area of our society and build to crisis proportion. If a run of really bad luck had consolidated the major news events of September into a single week (hurricanes and financial crisis plus a step up in storm ferocity destroying oil production and refining capacity) we might have had a much worse time than we have.
If you have ever seen a presentation from your local historical society on the impact of the 1919-21 flu epidemic and projected that to present day health services, travel, telecommuting, public safety and food supply you will see that our telecom infrastructure would be incredibly stressed for weeks or months at a time. Add in some events like the past few weeks, and whatever infrastructre Maybe it’s not a bad idea to have some controls in place to do some manual load balancing when that time comes. and keep things moving.
