Bumps in the Road at Seesmic

Lots of upset friends over at Seesmic – the online community that combines the best of Twitter and YouTube. Sujit, Rachael, JoAnn ended up with pink slips – and founder Seesmic CEO Loic Le Meur making some hard decisions. Sukhjit Ghag and Rachael Joy, were the hosts of its four-month-old shows unBoxing and Newspop. There was a veritable storm that locked up the Seesmic servers last night. The point was that the conflict was/is out in the open.

People all over the world have become involved in the immediacy of the tool – but it is so new, one of those technologies that is so transformational that it is hard to both describe and judge where it will fit in. I was introduced to Seesmic at Podcamp Boston by Tiil, at Podcamp Boston. I had a chance to speak with JoAnne at New Media Expo at length, and have Seesmic as an intregal part of the plans for SDRNews.
I have to speculate that the search for a business model for Seesmic is problematic. If Loic Le Meur started out with the idea of mixing regular show oriented television with an ad supported video IM serving as an extension to existing social media, it may be that he had to change course. Seesmic moves the interactive experience to the next level, adding a degree of personal connection that was probably not anticipated from a business and technical sense. That disrupts the provisioning of the hardware – and he probably never anticipated ‘connect times’ of hours of video with one user – Freida – posting over 13,000 video episodes.
You could tell that in Podcamp Boston. Half of the people in the room had never met in person, yet many had traveled hundreds or thousands of miles to establish the realtime connection that had been developed in the earlier months. There is no doubt that the community is in for some deep bumps in the road.
Let’s hope that Seesmic survives intact. It is going to be a big part of SDRNews.
