    Breaking Business Models

    by Andrew McCaskey

There is nothing so short as the half life of a business model for an online service. For the past few days I have been using the DropBox application, on recommendation of another Tech Podcaster – Mark Bradley of the Antipodean Podcast. Mark volunteered a beta invite to me after a quick post on Twitter. It turned out that it had just come out of closed beta that day, and I was able to download without problems.

With 2GB of free storage on Amazon S3, amazing speed after initial upload (since it sends only file changes) and the ability to run on every box in the house make it a real pleasure. Trips up and down stairs bearing thumb drives almost a thing of the past, except for one XP based audio workstation that will not see the light of the net. At least until the next upgrade of the App, and hopefully never an upgrade of XP pushed in the dark of night and breaking things for the next week. My only complaint is a heavy footprint on XP boxes, about 50MB of RAM for the app. I’ll get around to the Vista laptop later in the week,

Google “free on line Storage” and you find 13.6 Million entries, of which 13.59 Million now have, thanks to DropBox, broken business models. Apparently DropBox will be making its money for commercial versions with revision control, rollback, versioning, multiple editor lockouts and similar safeguards. Additional storage for photos and videos has got to be in the plan.

If you had a business offering free online storage, I’m afraid your game has changed.
