MobileMe iDisk Goes Behind the Cloud

    by Andrew McCaskey
The window for MobileMe to get it’s act together is closing quickly, and solutions from the cloud for storage are moving up fast. My personal experience with iDisk has been marginal at best, and I think that I am not alone.

Several technologies are poised to give the commercial offering a run for it’s money:

The elegant solution proposed by two Swiss mathemeticisn in the start-up Wuala, offers a combination of peer to peer distribution and fragmented files distributed over hundreds of nodes. Some clever polynomial encoding of the segments enable the reconstruction of the file on demand, with Reed-Solomon codes performing error detection and correction. This means that the entire file does not have to be retrieved bit-by-bit, only enough significant blocks that can be used to reconstruct the block, removing errors forwards and backwards from a pointer. This means uptimes close to 10e6 with only 17% of the subscribers that have file fragments having to be online at a given time. Add a layer of encryption, fast connections and acres of unused disk space and processor power on the subscriber machines, and a robust solution emerges. Not at any one place, but co-operatively. The big thing is that the single point of failure – Amazon or MobileMe – has just gone away.

At the other end of the spectrum is the new application DropBox. I’ve just done the new install on OSX, and will add PC clients and the MacMini tomorrow. If the video is anything close to the actual performance, this is going to be an absolute killer app. There is no training required. None – if you can drag and drop a file or folder and remember your password, you are in.
