    Changing Communications Modes

    by Andrew McCaskey

I had a quick Twitter message this evening from Tim Sullivan Selling Geek Podcast , concerning the Death of VoiceMail.

That linked me back to a Techcrunch article from about six weeks ago, where Michael Arrington wrote that

Voicemail is dead. Please tell everyone so they’ll stop using it.

.. in the mid-nineties voicemail was an important productivity tool.

But now an increasing number of people are just plain avoiding voicemail. It takes much longer to listen to a message than read it. And voicemail is usually outside of our typical workflow, making it hard to forward or reply to easily.

The services that really make voicemail more usable are those that convert voicemail into text and then send it to you via email or SMS ( Spinvox, PhoneTag Yap and Jott, for example).

For now most people don’t have voicemail transcription services. So think before you voicemail, more and more people just find it annoying.

I am beginning to see the evolution – I was a Twitter detractor up until my “Road to Columbus”
conversion at Podcamp Ohio. Business communication is changing very, very rapidly.

If you are in a fixed location, just opening up a few Skype chat windows to the folks you really need to communicate with. Or, if you are mobile, monitor their Twitter streams or set up a private Twitter group with direct messages.

Lots to learn and a moving target. But changing, for sure.
