The latest Pew Internet Trust survey shows that the majority of Americans still get their news from Television.
That, in itself is a bit frightening. If you Tivo the news from NBC or CBS – or for that matter, CNN you will be amazed to see how little of the thirty minutes actually contains news footage or items being read. The wall to wall commercials are just the start.
I can’t help but feel that these surveys – in fact all surveys that are telephone based are so deeply flawed that they are all but useless in measuring the population younger than about forty years of age.
How many thirty somethings and below that you know have a landline ? That group is almost certainly being undercounted.
How many busy middle aged people refuse to answer surveys (me included) after one sample that asks for just a few minutes of time and twenty minutes later you are getting close to the end ?
I fear that the Pew Internet survey is not giving a true picture at all – except for the

a sizable group of more engaged, sophisticated and well-off people that use both traditional and online sources to get news. ”
To which we’d all like to think we belong.
