      High Tech Lifestyle Budget

      by Andrew McCaskey
The article on the High Tech Lifestyle strikes a nerve.

If there is one budget item that has grown beyond all reason, it’s not fuel or energy – it’s connectivity. And, it is purely and directly related to quality of life, entertainment, making a living, and keeping in touch with friends, family, and colleagues.

The Journal News spoke of family budgets being zapped by a series of $20, $40, $60 a month deals to Direct TV, Comcast, Netflix, Audible, Verizon, Audible, T-Mobile, Sprint, iPhone/ATT and whoever else you’ve allowed the “auto-deduction” on the Visa card.

My problem is that I’m caught between the two worlds- embracing the new, but not cutting lose from the old. Still hanging on the landline in case you need 911 service or “maybe some DSL as a backup”.

The backup now for Comcast service is the combination of the EVDO card and the Cradlepoint EVDO-WiFi box, T-mobile is history, We live on the cellphones for mobile and the OOMA Voip for outbound. Why do I have Verizon in the house ?

Maybe because I want to be first in line for FiOS.
