iPhone 2.0 is the Story, Not 3G
by Andrew McCaskey
There has been all sorts of excitement-much of it generated in the blogosphere, harness and egged on by Apple – for the past 72 hours regarding the release of the 3G iPhone. Ever the showman, Steve Jobs himself appeared in a iPhone line.
The real business, though was the quiet push of the iPhone 2.0 software to the millions of existing iPhones.
I’ve spent the afternoon grabbing a look at the App Store offerings – both free and paid, and featured two of the most significant in the podcast tonight – the AOL version that allows you to us IM to circumvent the SMS per message charge, and the TruVoice VoIP client that allows VoIP calls to bypass the cellphone itself when in a WiFi node.
It looks like both come with plenty of limitations, but they have to be viewed as ground breaking additions.
Unmentioned on the podcast tonight – the Audio Spectrum Analyzer and Audio Signal generator apps – paid, but still less than $30.
There is more going on the the App Store in one day than I’ve seen in Telco sponsored and promoted apps in the past five years.
The next five years are going to be fun. (or at least the next 18 months – that’s how long my iPhone contract runs on the old platform. I’ll see if I can hold out that long before buying a new one.
