Windows 98
by Andrew McCaskey
The PCPitStop.com run off between Windows 98, Windows XP and Windows Vista was instructive.
Not from the standpoint of the “performance gap” of Vista versus XP versus Win98, normalized into a common hardware platform of 512MB of RAM – but from the fact that it should remind us of how far we have come in only ten years.
One of the reader comments pointed out that day to day operation under Windows 98 would require three or four re-boots per day. It’s easy to forget what an amazing accomplishment Windows XP was as far as stability. Trying to get the Win98 Winsock configured and operating from a networking standpoint is another pleasant thing to forget.
When Windows 7 comes out, will Microsoft have the courage to break with thirty years of legacy code and finally build something that is clean under the hood ? I hope so. My nostalgic moments for Windows 98 are fast evaporating.
Not so for CP/M . I still have the Compupro 8/16 in the garage, and when ambition strikes, it will be time to dust off the old 8085 opcodes and see if I can get it running again.
