Falling Through 3G Holes
by Andrew McCaskey
I certainly appreciate the cautionary note raided by Fortune and the Daily Tech – incomplete 3G coverage and the new iPhone.
The Sprint EVDO card has worked so well that it’s been easy to get really, really enthused about 3G. Even though there was going to be a premium in the data plan, plus the additional cash outlay and extension to the contract, the need for speed almost made the sale.
Until the article on 3G coverage.
It looks like AT&T has been lagging considerably compared with Sprint. The map has the same look as it did for years with other wireless services – stuck in a hole between major markets 70 to 100 miles away in each direction, but not profitable enough to add service to fill the hole.
In fact, it is worse than that. With coverage in Chicago/Gary 90 miles away, the nearest AT&T coverage beyond that is 150 miles south in Indianapolis.
Unless I do a lot more traveling, the 3G is simply not worth the money. Of course a new grandson in Indy might make it all worthwhile – especially if the new iPhone camera is improved.
It looks like I’ll be spending a lot of travel time in the AT&T 3G service area. Need to check that out. Grandkids do that to you.
