      Audacity of Audacity

      by Andrew McCaskey
I get a big charge out of the recurring theme that security is often the weakest in the most obvious places.

The publicity surrounding identity theft, corporate espionage and general mischief obscures the more consistent threat of social engineering. The story today concerns the news item from DarkReading.com of a penetration team that relies upon faked documents, timing, projection of authority and capitalizes upon the good nature and willingness to help for successful compromise time after time.

One of the consequences of an open society is that the helpfulness of strangers is often an open door invitation to social engineering. Telecommuting from remote areas of the country into metro areas is becoming more and more common.

Expect to see those who specialize in the dark arts to start to probe those isolated employees as opportunity for technical and social espionage. Their connectivity and laptops are just as valuable as the VPN card and hand written passwords on sticky note nabbed in the O’Hare airport or a theft in Sunnyvale.
