Scams and the Web of Trust

      by Andrew McCaskey
The article on gas-saving scams (fuel line magnets, turbo vortex anything, hydrogen cracked on the fly) seems to cite the sort of thing that used to inhabit the small print ads in the back of barbershops. But, like seven year locusts( appearing a bit more frequently, now) they are back.

Consult the Edmunds.com link for some real info.

Placed in context with the Bruce Schnier article in Wired on why we trust faxed signatures -being so easy to forge, technically – the gas stories make sense.

The web of trust and context that we place around technology – gas saver device or internet – makes the suspension of disbelief almost rational. Even if we have some doubts, the context smooths our fears and our belief in progress and that somewhere, someone either has an interest or a job doing the fact checking. Most of the time we are right, and the claims check out.
