Superfast Internet and Ten Ways

It’s rare that two sides of the same coin show up in the same day’s news – but there are two exciting and thought provoking items today.
First, the CERN based optical network promising 10,000 fold increases in speed – replacing the thirty year rollout that is today’s internet.
Second, the thoughtful description of how the internet of today is highly unlikely to be the one that will be used by our grandchildren.
Since our first one is expected in September, a timely discussion, indeed.
What was the state of computer communications available to the average tech minded enthusiast 21 years ago ? Surprisingly useful – even with 8 bit processors, CP/M and 300 baud modems. Rudimentary email, FIDOnet forwarding schemes and printers, if not the graphics we have become some used to today.
In fact, computer communications were probably in better shape that mobile communications. – with just the glimmer of analog cellphone systems replacing FM simplex and duplex links and mobile phones.
The GigOM analysis of ten ways the internet might die has a heavy dose of human nature, regulation, and lawyers. Never a good combination.
