Faster Net Speeds – But Damaged Brand
by Andrew McCaskey
Comcast is announcing trials of the DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem in the Minneapolis market. Claimed speeds are 50 Mb/sec down and 6 Mb/sec up, at a price of $150 per month.
You have to be a real Hulu fan to get excited about this – or want your AppleTV HD purchases served up promptly.
On the other hand, doing all that, a few VoIP lines and other uses might just push it into the realm of possibility.
I am afraid that Comcast – in a competive market – might end up with a bit of a tarnished product that up against FiOS from Verizon. Simply put, the way that things have rolled out the past year, Comcast has all sorts of ways to block, tweak, throttle and constrain – while Verizon has at least for the moment kept their hands off.
I would hate to pay $150 for super speeds and then find that the type of traffic that I chose to deploy caused by 50MBb/sec pipe to throttle back to 5Mb/sec, based on some formula that Comcast uses to load balance out kids who have just gotten home in the afternoon and are busy downloading all sorts of stuff.
And as a small business owner, I would REALLY resent the $200 that represented a $50 uplift for “security software” over the residential package.
Of course, the chances that Verizon gets here with FiOS in any meaningful time horizon are about nil.. so I will keep my mouth shut and say thank you when Comcast comes to call.
