      Merged Video Experience

      by Andrew McCaskey
I guess that I should not be surprised by the study on how television is consumed by most people between 9 and 17 – in tandem with online .

The study concluded that at least 33% of those watching American Idol were online at the same time, and that with just a little nudge in the right direction, they could be coaxed to open up a page for a richer media experience. Another 45% were also on some sort of social media site or IM, just in case things got boring with the broadcast, the program’s web page, the embedded ads, or other amusements.

I should have known, because that is exactly how I consume media – except that my mix includes a program I am watching realtime on HD over the air while something buffers into the Tivo and I have the laptop fired up with Skype IM active, a browser or two open. And, in a last gesture to tradition, a paper folded open off to the side of the laptop. Other than the realtime coupling offered by the teenager’s IM it’s pretty close.

No wonder there’s such a problem holding the audience.
