The winner of the 700Mhz spectrum auction is yet to be announced. We can only keep our fingers crossed that Google has submitted the winning bid for Block C, the block that not only has the requirement for open access, but that has enough regional licenses that truly pervasive nationwide coverage might be possible.
The critical nature of internet access for so many of us in our day job ( and podcasting) means that having a single point of access – Comcast or Verizon in my case – is just about intolerable. A 700Mhz service could complement the soon to be spotty Wimax service (should it ever get built out) and provide layers of redundency at DSL like speeds at least.
The struggle to maintain access from smaller towns and rural areas is at least starting to get onto the radar of local politicians – and is becoming as critical to the economic development of a region as insuring that the Interstate went through your Midwest town fifty or sixty years ago.
If Google did not win the block and one of the established carriers has bought up the spectrum just to sit on it, my only hope is that the Internet – in its very best manner – will route around the obstruction. I have a feeling that it will.
