      The Dog that Didn’t Bark

      by Andrew McCaskey
I had a chance to catch up with a friend on Skype today – he had relocated to Australia, and I happened to catch him on IM and he just rang me back.

The call came into Skype, rolled over to my Cell phone and I offered to call him back on Skype.
I fired up the laptop, and since the family room TV still had on the news, I wandered to the living room and then upstairs seeking quiet, all the while chatting away.

Once I got upstairs, just for grins turned on the MacBook’s internal camera, as did Rob, and there we were – chatting away on a full video connection.

A few minutes later, we took note: Just how cool is that ? Only a slight lag as the packets hopped router to router, under the Pacific Ocean to the other side of the world – video, smiles, commentary and – if the house had been straighter or the wife not at home the basis for a quick tour.

Just like in the Sherlock Holmes story, the remarkable thing was that the dog did not bark – meaning that – both of us seasoned technologists – took note of the fact, paused, and then went on with our conversation. The technology receding into the background, not to be mentioned again.

      From Wikipedia – Silver Blaze

Gregory (Scotland Yard detective): “Is there any other point to which you would wish to draw my attention?”
Holmes: “To the curious incident of the dog in the night-time.”
Gregory: “The dog did nothing in the night-time.”
Holmes: “That was the curious incident.”
