What Else is New ? The Inkjet Non-Story

      by Andrew McCaskey
The thing that punches me up on the inkjet front is the double-jeopardy of limited use and dry-out. I’m willing to pay the price, but would like at least a fair shot to use up what I buy.

The article this evening is a bit of a dramatic replay of one circulating maybe four to six weeks ago – the price of those milli-liter cartridges for consumer inkjet printers.

While most of the discussion surrounded the option of printing photos yourself versus 12 cents at Walmart from your USB thumb drive, my use is almost entirely routine office printing, or my wife’s quilt design patterns on the Lexmark.

Most of the printers/multiscanners in the house are HP. I use them as little as possible – as surprising as it might be, the noise and slowness is one of my main aggravations. Most of the time I print to the trusty old Laserjet IV – although it is probably on its last legs as everything else in the office is on USB – and if the company laptop and port replicator goes, that’s going to be the last of the Laserjet.

The greatest aggravation is the fax machine. About every six weeks there is some requirement for one page or two of fax reception or transmission, and the HP machine Deskjet included the scam that if the color cartridge was dried up, it would refuse to print with a new black cartridge in place. Both had to be fresh. That combo unit is now at Goodwill . The replacement one is somewhat better, but the greatest problem is still carts that die from lack of use.

And most of the $8000 a gallon fluid goes to waste.
