Moving On – HD on Disk

      by Andrew McCaskey
Toshiba shares are up 5% in relief that there will no longer be the long protracted and expensive battle. Reuters announced the end of HD-DVD manufacture, and there is nothing left to do other than get the now obsolete materials out of the supply chain, and get on with the business of cranking up Blu-Ray.

That’s what the industry would like for us to believe, and our job as consumers is, after all, to consume.

It’s going to be interesting to see how all of this plays out. First of all, those HD-DVD players are now going to move to kid’s rooms, or be used to play regular DVD’s with some sort of upscaling when they are used on flatpanel displays.

What if consumers don’t move along as they are supposed to ? AppleTV 2.0 and Netflicks downloads and Amazon /Tivo and similar services are looking pretty good. Plus the cost of disk storage continues to plummet and – I’ve been told – BIttorrent has a new trick up the sleeve for the cat and mouse with Comcast.

I’m not sure sure that I am ready to spring for the new Blu-Ray right now.
