Extended Warrant? Your Mileage May Vary

      by Andrew McCaskey
Thanks to Stephanie, a loyal listener who oftern sends along comments by email. Here’s some thoughts that she offered on the recent story on Extended Warranties from Consumer Reports

I don’t generally thing extended warranties are good things,
but I believe thare are exceptions. For me this would include notebook
computers – if one expects to keep them over 3 years and will be carrying
      them around.

Maybe for me there should be some “klutz” factor included. The bigger thing
for me is the cost of moving to a replacement computer with all the
software, data, etc. My 5 year old dell is still running quite well. On it’s
5th (yes – fifth) motherboard, new case bottom, case top, new lcd, new
keyboard and touchpad, and new speakers. Almost all of these were replaced
because I tripped over a lan or power cable and brought my computer crashing
to the floor. ..Dell happily came to my home and fixed the
computer quickly and reliably without any hassles. And I never had to move
my dozens of applications and many gigabytes of information to a new
      computer.

The cost of the 5 year warranty was about 2/5th the cost of the original
computer. It included the accidental damage coverage. A great deal in my
opinion. How much would the 5 motherboards cost? A 1920X1200 15.4″ LCD? I’m
skilled enough to do the repairs myself but I didn’t have to and I’m happy
      about that.

Anyway, while the extended warranty offers are often scams, there are
exceptions and I think laptops are one of them.

Agreed – and as I said to her in my reply, we’ve had a similar incident in our family (tripping over power cord, Dell laptop sailing) where we did not have warranty protection – and that was a long and expensive (money and time) replacement .For the reasons that she cites, I do have Applecare on the MacBook Pro.

Conclusion ? It’s the same set of tradeoffs and YMMV.
