      Innovation’s Secrets

      by Andrew McCaskey

The New York Times article on innovation – pointing out that our present techology relies much more on gradual innovation rather than a flash of brilliance – has an interesting twist.

The myth of the lone inventor, against all odds in a flash of brilliance and a flurry of activity – seems to be the creation of two interesting parties. Business – holding out to investors and stockholders that possibility that they have located a single brilliant superstar and gained competitive advantage. Hollywood is just as eager to find and feature the personality and drama involved.

The NYT article offered the less entertaining and dramatic facts of the matter – that most of the progress in technology and science occurs only by refinement or addition to the current art. It’s particularly hard for internet related companies to admit that innovation in business methods, the thrill of new media, and such innovative approaches as Second Life and Facebook would not be here today, had it not been for some very unglamorous underlying technology.
