Excitement at MacWorld
by Andrew McCaskey
I have only sketchy reports on the sessions at MacWorld – and have been able to see none of the proceedings due to the day job. But from all reports, Steve Jobs was able to envelop the crowd once again and present the MacBook Air in his normal form and flair.
It is interesting to note that the laptop apparently has no LAN connector (in addition to no optical drive, as speculated) – and that it does not contain the Wimax chipset as speculation led us to believe.
That cements the wireless 802.11N standard flavor of WiFi firmly in place for the next 18 months or so – and the Sprint Wimax Xohm network will have to make it on the PC laptop platform.
That may not be such a bad move on Apple’s part. Let the first generation of clunky Wimax USB adapters get globbed onto those Dell and HP boxes. Let the coverage and reliability issues get shook out.
Then come out with the MacBook rev in 2009 that puts it into an elegant package, and get the early majority of the market. By that time, the 64GB hard drive won’t be an $1800 option and the MacBook Air II will really be ready for takeoff.
