DVR Use Good News for Advertisers

      by Andrew McCaskey
It’s hard to remember that as an audience, we may not be very representative of the population as a whole. At the first reading, I was surprised by the article from TechMeme that suggested that most DVR owners don’t use the machines to skip over commercials.

That idea is so entirely foreign to me – a proud owner of a Series I Tivo as well as the Series II ( and an HD or HD lite or whatever Tivo calls their high definition box is in the future). I can’t imagine NOT using the box to skip over car commercials, headache remedies and the like. I also can’t imagine not backtracking to watch the latest Mac -vs- PC ad or checking out .. whatever it was I wanted to check out.

Apparently, I am as out of sync with the regular consumer as are most other geeks or early adopters. The public at large – these are the same folks that LIKE having their 4:3 video stretched out W-I-D-E seem to be using the time shifting and skipover capabilities of their DVR only about 5% of the time.

Of course, from what little I have seen of non-Tivo DVR’s – that’s probably about the best thing that can be done. From a menu/speed/responsiveness standpoint, the DVR’s that I have seen from providers such as Brighthouse cable and Comcast operate so slowly with such a clunky interface and menu/directory structure that it’s painful.

Of course, that’s the point. It becomes too much trouble to even scan the listings – it’s easier to channel surf and take whatever gets served up.
Just like the bad old days. The only thing missing is the flashing 88:88 ‘s. Programming that into the cable company’s DVR would be real reality TV.
