Just How Smart are We ?
by Andrew McCaskey
Today’s YouTube is a seven minute video from 1957 with the product overview for the first commercial hard drive based computer. I have to admit the first minute or so was a sort of campy fun – I can’t believe that those people were so primitive, so ignorant.
If you have the same reaction, keep watching. Your attitude will change – especially when I consider that that was less than a decade before I started engineering school.
About two thirds of the way through the proud presentation of 600 millisecond seek times, printing 20 characters per line, execution of instructions in the blink of an eye and programming with hardwire plugboards you will come away a bit humbled.
Even though that memory is the size of a small oil drum those platters and servos are doing their thing. On second thought, you will be a lot humbled. Just like those who invented NTSC television in 1941 and compatible color in the early 1950′s, that generation of engineers deserves a lot more respect than we are prompted to give.
