The start of Genetic Age
The video today concerns the services of 23andme and the genetic association of markers and diseases.
It certainly grabbed by attention, coming three years to the day from my danger close incident with a Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) attack. On that day, after three or four days of pain during a marathon programming session over several days followed by a trade show and nagging from my wife, I finally went to the doctor who took one look, went pale and dispatched me to the emergency room.
I had been very, very lucky not to have experienced stroke, heart attack or death during those three days. The family history interview – with that knowledge – became a lot more meaningful – and put three generations of medical history into immediate perspective.
I am not sure that I’m ready to write the big check for the 23andme service right now.. but if I had known three and a half years ago that I was in danger or had a high probablility oF DVT.
I would have been glad that I had that knowledge.
