      QR Codes and Cellphones

It’s always interesting to see a technology that’s ahead of its time come into it’s own.

That’s the potenial for the QR code from Japan. The name “QR” stands for “Quick Response” – and the technology in websites, connectivity, and camera seem to be finally to a stage (and playing well enough together) that it’s approachable.

Here’s a QR image that I generated from the site at qrcode.kaywa.com

      QR Image

I could just as easily have described a particular product, view or item – in fact, a serious level of detail.

      Numeric only Max. 7,089 characters
      Alphanumeric Max. 4,296 characters
Binary (8 bits) Max. 2,953 bytes

While this was pretty good information density in the early 90′s when it was designed, the ability of a connected device to take that information with embedded links, and then act upon it is operating at an entirely new level.
Combine this with the new open policies in 2008 from both Verizon and Sprint (any device – any application) and some creative applications should start to appear.

How could you use those combinations of density, linkage, and open networks ?

      It should be fun.
