The past week or ten days we have had a full range of alternative energy videos – wind, solar/photovoltaic, and topped it off with the article on enhanced hydrogen production with specially encouraged microbes, in the story from Penn State.
It looks like the final push towards $100 a barrel oil and the US consumer gasoline price well over $3.00 per gallon are providing the final impetus for some serious efforts in technology aware centers around the world.
The big challenge is going to be keeping the government out of the business of the technology. You can already see the WSJ articles that are becoming increasingly critical of ethanol – a scheme cooked up by politicians and allies in the corn belt states – and how the smart pols are already eyeing the exits, just in case this thing needs to be on the bail-out list. Not meaning the industry needs a bail-out, but that the politicians will need to have some “plausible deniability”that they were a willing partner to the hoax.
Microbes, hybrids, wind, nuclear, solar -and a healthy diet of conservation and selecting for efficiency – are going to be the path out of this mess. Only problem is, it took 115 years to get to this point and we don’t have 115 years to get back on track.
