Nano Solar: Is This the Breakthrough ?

Years ago, working at Harris Corporation in Rochester NY, one of my fellow engineers engaged in some speculation on the future of photo-voltaics. This was in the late 70′s memory of the first oil shock right behind us, a second shock with the Iranian Revolution right around the corner.

He said that what was needed were two types of paint. The N-Paint and the P-Paint. Brushed on the side of the house, covering the roof – two large clip leads to tap the power, and the world’s search for energy would be solved. All that was missing was the invention of the paint.

Nanosolar seems to have come very, very close – with the “paint” applied in a factory industrial process akin to printing on metal foil sheets. If the target price is reached and vehicular systems begin to standardize on some sort of hybrid electric infrastructure, delivery vans, busses and trucks could begin to make use of such panels if only to power accessories or to augment hybrid peak power devices. That initial surge in demand could start the mass production cycle of accelerated learning curve and volume economies of scale. It could not be more welcome, or come at a better time.
