Privacy Given Up
The rise of Facebook, MySpace, and similar cultures carry with them the expectation of transience, but the characteristic of permanence.
Clay Shirkey and others have long voiced an element of concern on the long term impact of openness and awareness willingly given up, for short term notoriety or commercial gain.
Your data, your attention, your clickstream all of interest to someone somewhere. Not that you are yourself particularly interesting – but from the supermarket check out club and analysis of your buying patterns (wine, beer, diapers or peanut butter) various inferences can be drawn.
Add to this the record of your motion that GPS tracking permits (in the interest of safety or navigation awareness) and there will be some way of filling up those Terrabyte thumb drives, albeit slowly, even with video.
Some thought leaders in the Attention space had it nailed long ago. It’s not necessary for governments to seize power over its citizens – they will willingly give up their rights to be entertained.
Neil Postman had it right in his book more than fifteen years ago. We are Amusing Ourselves to Death.
