      Chemistry Sets

The combination of paranoia on terrorism and methamphetamine production has conspired to all but eliminate the staple of sixth grade Christmas giving, the Chemistry Set.

The 12 Angry Men blog has a wonderful description of the Gilbert Chemistry Set that was a dependable fixture of anyone interested in science or engineering in the 1950′s and 1960′s. The memories of sulfur, hydrogen flames, test tubes and chlorine – along with the somewhat affordable ignition cell dry cell batteries (still in use in rural areas in the 1950′s for local telephone loop and electric fence chargers).

All gone – due to restrictions permits and general nanny state oversight.

Not that you can still purchase diesel fuel and fertilizer on the open market.

I can’t say it much better than they do :

“What is at stake here is no less than the future of America’s competitiveness and the innovation the make the United States the magnet for international entrepreneurs and scientists. Without the chemistry set, will we have scientists and innovators, or just a country of rock stars, political commentators and movie idols.”
