3D Printing – Future Getting Closer

Today’s video is a full color 3D prototyping printer that enables creation of complex color structures in a few hours.

It’s a far cry from some of the stereo lithography printers of the past fifteen or twenty years, and I feel quite sure is still very expensive for use by an individual or small business.

But – fast forward another five or seven years. The efforts by the Fab-At-Home open source project could begin to offer some really competitive and destabilizing advances. The underlying computational power is certainly going to be there, and the mechanics and chemistry are surely not far behind.

You have to remember that it was only about fifteen years ago that Linus Torvald’s project began to take the first steps.

And it is always easier to make something happen if you have model of what you are trying to build. Until Linux, you would not have imagined that such an effort would be possible.

I wonder if you have to have a Billionaire around to come up with the Ubuntu of 3D Printing ? Maybe Mark Shuttleworth is looking for a new challenge.

Or maybe after Facebook gets tiresome, Zuckerman is looking for something to keep him occupied – say from age 25 to age 30.
