      Verizon Powers Onward

The ability of Verizon to power onward on a number of fronts simultaneously is testimony to the power of a lot of momentum, lobbying effort and some would say planning and execution.

After the breakup of the Bell System in 1984, the local operating companies were left with the crumbs – or so many thought. Bell Atlantic, Nynex, SNET and maybe one or two others suffered through the 1980′s and 1990s – but hit their stride in the wireless side of the business.

Once they gained their footing as Verizon, they parlayed the wireless business into a big bet on fiber capacity, especially fiber to the home or fiber to the curb.

It looks like it is about to pay off in a big way – with the uptake on the FIOS service approaching thirty percent whenever it is offered. Even though their cost is roughly two to three times that of each home install when compared to Comcast or other cable operators, the right technical choice puts them in the long term driver’s seat.

The only thing that can hold them back is their DNA as, well, the phone company. Early adopter that I am, I tried to replace a failed 1999 Fujitsu DSL modem (based on Frame-Relay technology, which went obsolete around 2004). The 1-800 number said they could not help, take it to a Verizon store. The Verizon store said they recommended that I call the online service, cancel my order, wait two weeks, call up fresh and order a new service install and then, if I could drop by the store they could help me. On the way home with a wasted trip under my wheels I decided that the best home for the Fujitsu was a dumpster. And that Comcast had my vote for the next few years until that FIOS came to town.
