Time for Change in the Wireless Space

Walt Mossberg’s extensive article on the wireless industry should be a major clue to wireless service providers in the US that their days are numbered, just as their ancestrial local phone company / ATT Longlines relatives thirty five years ago should have received the major clue of the Carterphone and MCI decisions of the late 1960′s.

The time has come – and Google and the rest of the Silicon Valley establishment are ready to pull out all the stops to make sure that the days of locked down oligopoly in the wireless business come to and end.

It is hard for most people today to realize the accomplishment and the impediment that the Bell System and its monopoly lent to the country.

Mossberg characterized it well as a Soviet operating model of central planning, with all of the associated inertia and discouragement of innovation. The only question: Will a third of the 700 Mhz spectrum that will be set aside for the unlocked wireless service be enough of a window to exert pressure on the industry as a whole ?

There is probably no more important auction in the history of the country – and it will determine the course of technological leadership for the rest of the century. If one of the incumbents like Verizon wins the bid – they will sit on the allocation and strangle the infant in the cradle.

Let’s hope that the good guys win –
