Unintended Consequences of Whitelists
The articles on the continued growth of hundreds of thousands of new malware species discovered in the past six months is discouraging (which may explain why most of the production for SDRNews is on the OSX Platform).
It looks like the proposed solution, though, might have some unintended consequences of it’s own.
If a white-list of applications that are permitted to run are maintained, what happens when there is a legitimate modification or extension of a product that some how did not make it onto the list ?
I am thinking specifically of professional applications such as EDA tools, audio editing or – for that matter – Firefox.
Such products easily involve scores of simulators, options, libraries, User Interface modules, plug-ins, extensions and may involve license files with hundreds of increments of code.
First, the combinations and permutations are staggering – and secondly, the applications are just esoteric enough that they would bounce to the end of the queue for any commercial spyware protection outfit.
Not to mention executable scripts that I’ve patched together to handle simple tasks or make things go just a bit smoother. Or open source materials that I have tweaked just a bit.
Whitelist security sounds great- but you may want to be careful what you wish for.
