      Mobility Trumps Speed

The article tonight concerning the plans for 802.11n had several themes that seem to make sense.

The article speculated that regular LAN wired connectors might make as much sense as planning jets for gaslights in your next cube farm. The author observed that two of his children ages 18 and 21 had never had a wired connection – and that this is rapidly becoming the norm.

Cumbersome and annoying as the in-house WiFi has been – it’s still better than pulling cable throughout. And monster file downloads not withstanding – most of the demands are far more modest and well offset by convenience.

Those knowledge workers who still have a place to work (ie an office) will find that mobility there has value as well.

I suspect that Steve Jobs called this one right. For the time being, at least, the ability to connect from virtually anywhere (with an almost pervasive EDGE / ATT net work ) and enable the mobile lifestyle to continue even at low speeds trumps the ability to connect only when in a hotspot or wired in place.

At least with the demographic who knows that wired connections are on the endangered species list, even in the enterprise. In five or ten years, that demographic and their younger siblings are going to be the enterprise.
