Another Entrant in the HD-DVD Race
With the Radio Shack and Costco distibution channels and a $150 retail price for the player, it looks like the late entry in the HD Disk format marketplace has two out of three.
The third ingredient will doom this format – the initial announcement said that there are a grand total of twenty movies available in the format, although more on the way, soon.
I am reminded of the RCA video disk format of 1980 or or Phillips CD Video format from about 1985. Both those companies had attractive pricing and good distribution – but had failed to capture the attention of the content providers in sufficient numbers to attract consumer attention.
If you are a collector of oddball formats and devices, you better get to the Radio Shack Center near you. These are going to be hard to find, and even with eBay are going to be harder to find in the future.
