      Ibiqity’s Second Chance

For the past three years – at least – there has been a hard row to hoe for at least one segment of the consumer electronics marketplace – the “HD Radio” marketeers and manufacturers.

With a proprietary technology from Ibiquity, the IBOC “In Band On Channel” has been struggling to gain traction. The range of consumer choices in the mobile audio department – XM, Sirius and iPod – combined with the widespread sharing and / or piracy of content makes it very hard to get consumers to part with a large and expensive HD Radio. Some older consumers (like me) have memories of Chrysler automobiles with Deluxe Audio Sound Systems that foisted “AM Stereo with the Kahn (or was it Motorola) (or was it Magnavox) or was it one of half a dozen systems “competing” for standards.

If the rumors are true, a HD Radio enabled iPod with the “Buy Now ” button could turn this around in a heartbeat. In addition to relieving the load on iTMS servers to download the digital content, the only fly in the ointment will be the next time that is gets docked, syncs with iTunes and hits Dad’s credit card for another $12 that the teen has accumulated in button pushes for the tune of the moment.

Absolutely brilliant. A little revenue share for each song to the HD broadcaster will breath life into a non-viable medium, and lock those broadcasters in to the next digital medium. And sell a few hundred million more iPods.
