HDTV Will Disappoint a Lot of People
My new son-in-law has added one of the home necessities (he assures me) in the form of a fifty-some inch rear projection HDTV. We haven’t seen it yet, but the reports from Newlywed Heaven are decidedly mixed. Even at 1080p.
The ATSC over the air HD content looks great. The Blue Ray from the PS3 looks great. The SD content that arrives from the TIVO or conventional RF tuner.. not. so. great. As a matter of fact, regardless of screen size, regular TV looks WORSE on the new TV than on the regular 34 inch CRT.
The link from Extreme Tech hits half a dozen price points, show examples of HDTV’s that do an excellent job on regular SD content, and explains why this is happening.
The source of the trouble is found in the up and down conversion that is needed to go from the fixed screen resolutions of the display itself, and transcoding from a variety of video formats. The quality of these converter chipsets varies considerably.
So, shopping for a flatscreen ? There seems that there is some difference other than the color of the speaker bezel. You just have to read carefully and do your homework.
