Data Recovery Series
Two videos in the series, with the recovery of data from forensic data at MyHardDriveDied.com .
One of the big things that has consumed a lot of time this summer was my daughter’s wedding, and one of the stresses involved data recovery.
One of the components of the wedding dinner and festivities involved a looping DVD of photos of the bride and groom from baby photos through all the childhood, college and young adult years. You can see the cloud on the horizon, and my interest in data recovery.
A few weeks of scanning in photos from both families resulted in about 2 GB of photos. There was a four year old Dell that had been recently deadlined (tripped over power brick, Dell to cement) so the decision was made to move to a new HP laptop from Fry’s for the scan project.
The first project was to pull old data from the Dell onto the HP – consisting of recent photos. With a USB adapter, setting it to slave, part I was accomplished. Part 2 was the scanning operation, about a month of evenings and weekends – so all told, about 3GB of data.
To shorten the story, brand new HP laptop refuses to boot, daughter calls in panic, son in law takes to Fry’s and for $60 they pronounce it dead. Calls to Forensic services were $30 to look at it, up to $1500 to recover the data.
We had a good outcome – I was able to boot the machine with Helix, mount the drive and thumb drive, and copy the data over. But it was a lot of work and worry, just within a few days of the wedding itself.
I sure wish I had discovered the videos we have today before that time. And, I will tell you that I now have the Drobo backup unit, and Tubes from family members to store the photos at several places.
