The Real News About Skype
The real news about Skype’s outage — the fact that it’s the first outage that’s made the technical news.
One of the un-heralded success stories, from a general news standpoint, is how much Skype has become embedded in the daily tech life of millions of people. Still not ready for customer facing initial calls, but capabable of amazing performance.
In fact, aside from the cost savings, the convenience of Skype (especially Skype Out into the commercial network) and the audio quality (in general) are nothing short of amazing. It has been an invaluable business tool, especially with those whose first languge is not English. The reason is – the dynamic range and clarity of the Skype call is usually so far superior to the commercial connection that any latency or echo is easily forgiven.
The changes in the voice network business are substantial, and I am looking very closely at the OOMA VoIP System – dropping back the Verizon line to one basic lifeline connection for 911 use – and putting everything within the Voip world.
My kids are able to move entirely to cellphones, but I can’t quite make the leap. But that does not mean that I’m opposed to changing the magic behind the curtain.
