      Tivo’s Catch 22

Let’s hope that Tivo is able to make the transition to luxury good status more gracefully than the Model 3.

There are very few products that have the brand identification (moving to a verb) that TiVo enjoys, or the product to back it up.

What they are having trouble with is the business model – as the incumbent cable operators continue to move the boxes under a rental model. Unfortunately, as these boxes are supplied by the cable company to the majority of consumers the features that we know and appreciate as geeks are bound to get engineered out.

If you value the Tivo experience (I started with the Series I , have a Series II and have the now affordable $300 HDTV box in the cross-hairs) you will insist on genuine Tivo boxes. Else you will be back on the set-top box train.
