XP is Not Going Gracefully
The news that XP is expected to remain at least 28% of MS sales in FY08 is more interesting than it might first appear.
First, if these projections (which MS figured would be about half that) are in dollar terms, it represents a much larger number of PC’s, simply because of the unit cost of XP versus Vista.
Secondly, those XP installations are the result of true customer demand, not the push from manufacturers to the consumer that characterize Vista sales.
Extension of XP Home and XP Media Center support to 2014 (along with XP Pro) sounds about right.
My day job laptop lease is expiring in August. Just noted on the work order that the Vista image that the company announced in March has been quietly changed to XP Pro. That’s a very good thing and one two year lock in contract that I am not upset about at all.
