      OOma – VoIP Round Two

It never hurts to have Walt Mossberg of the Wall Street Journal to be your first big PR splash.

It looks like the Silicon Valley start up Ooma has pulled it off, with a $400 VoIP hub that integrates a minimal service landline for 911 and backup coverage into a hub package of services that promise Nationwide calling for free as long as you own the box.

I’m already on the early sign up list – since my personal payback on the device will be about five months. Due to the irregular coverage in the house from the Cellphone network, I have never been able to drop the landline completely – and the combination of years with the same number, call waiting/callerID and all the goodies it has been hard to get the rest of the family interested.

This looks like it’s going to be the charm. The box should be available in September, which means that the free forever calls will begin around the first of the year. Stay tuned.
