The Red Tape of Two Year Contracts

The story of most interest this evening was the item about a Sprint customer, out of contract, who had his contract extended by two years because he inquired about the status of his contract.

This is the sort of foolishness that adds insult to the injury of locked handsets, confusing terms and deceptive claims.

I wonder which carrier will be the first to realize that there has got to be a market for “no hassle” services.

I wonder which carrier will destroy the illusion of “free handsets” and offer service without the BS. It would be pricy, but transparent – with unlocked phones (where-ever you buy it) being price of admission.

Offer “unlimited data” that allows you to nail up the connection and watch the Slingbox video on the phone, if you so choose. If I am paying the piper, I literally get to call the tune.

Dispense with the nights/weekends/rollover/roaming/ and just say: Use our network for voice it’s gonna cost you dearly. Don’t use it much, and we are a lot more reasonable. Use our Voip and it’s affordable. Use someone else’s Voip and take the quality of service hit – knock yourself out, bits are bits.

Subsidize SMS, IM, Twitter, Pownce and similar services to make them almost transparent for use.

Make it easy for email, if customers desire.

Put in a GPS Receiver, and then make your money on location specific ads – and give me a discount if I leave the ad switch on, and log in from the restaurant or shop. Sock it to me if I turn the ads off.

And most of all – if either of us thinks it’s a bad deal ? Thirty days and the last bill gets settled up.

I bet that there would be a line to sign up. Too bad no iPhone owners will be standing in it.
