T-Mobile’s New Strategy
T-Mobile might just have a winning strategy among early adopters – with mainstream users not too far behind.
The Wall Street Journal and others made the point that the iPhone was a symptomatic treatment not a cure for what really ails the consumer: the carriers.
My recent trip to the ATT/Cingular store to look at the iPhone versus Blackberry versus Nokia 61i Smartphone disclosed how boxed in I really am: Even though I am past the 2 year contract period it is still going to take a “modification” to my plan, and another two year contract – regardless of which approach I take. In my case over $100 a month for the family plan. That “unlimited data” is not really unlimited data – it is unlimited opportunity to purchase ringtones, $2.99 music downloads or other services. There is another $20 per month to get “email unlimited data”.
If I am going to swallow a two year lock-in , maybe it is time to change carriers.
The T-mobile approach – with the WiFi option begins to look really attractive. The savings comes from cancelling the landline completely – and with the WiFi access point inside the house, the one objection to use of the mobile phone as the primary (spotty or non-existant coverage inside the aluminum siding) goes away.
I am going to be watching this one closely.
