DRM Flip Flop on Virtual Machines

Parallels for the Mac was the first Virtual Machine app that I have used – but I got in right under the wire with an OEM XP installation.

I was not looking forward to running Vista on the Mac – and especially not lookng forward to adding the $399 version.

From tonight’s news, it looks like the reason behind all this is pretty simple: a VM installation is a small crack in the DRM dike, and MS can’t take the risk of compromise on non-DRM’s content release.

Until the end of 2007, I understand that the XP OEM copies will be available – and you may want to purchase a few copies to set on the shelf. I feel sure that there will be a strong secondary market for un-opened XP disks – although MS might pull a fast one and refuse to validate XP registrations past a certain date.

      That wouldn’t happen – would it ?
