Real Threats and the Terror Business
Bruce Schneir’s article on “Modern Terrorist as an Idiot” could not have come at a better time.
Namely, a slow news week is when his type of story is welcomed- and the main stream press might, just might, pick up a fragment of his story.
In a nutshell, here’s his argument: exageration of the size, capability and scope panics the public into demanding politcal action. From the actions of a bunch of clowns, we derive threats where non exist and in the political demand for immediate corrective action, do real damage.
1. The world wide network of terrorists and JIhaddists includes many well trained and competitent people.
2. These people have a problem – an even larger lnumber of wannabe soldiers and zealots that, while useful as suicide bomber recruits have little use elsewhere.
3. Uncontrolled in a dispersed operation, zealots can and do decide to embark on Jihad with little or no technical expertise, logistical resources. training, logistics, planning, from an operational perspective.
4. The Press – seeking to build ratings inflates the reputation of the terrorist and seriousness of the threat. In general, just scares the bejesus out of the country at large.
5. Politicians- in the the election cycle pressure cooker to do something, respond (particualarly this administration) by restricting further the rights of citizens. and cause the real damage.
6. The populace, at large, remembers all of the theater and rhetoric, All in the name of security – while the terrorists are caught using old fashioned police work.
