Careers and Transfer Costs
The US News and World Report of “Get Ahead Careers” had a few surprises in the Health Care area. I had assumed that the retiring and aging Baby Boomers would be one of the main underlying drivers that would make almost ANY career in the Health Care world a slam dunk.
Recent history should have provided me with some caution with regard to anything that brings the words “Slam Dunk” to mind. It looks like the health care world is no exception – the dark spot being, surprisingly Physicians. The combination of grueling preparation, demanding hours – albeit with high compensation – and high liability (professional and personal) is already placing the career field under strain. The addition of health care reform legistation and regulation (at either Federal or State level) breaks the bank.
One of the factors that was not in the comparison is the impact of a shift in commute patterns- say from a company re-organization or shift to less expensive office space in the suburbs. A shift from 20 minute walk and Metro to a 55 minute one way drive in commuter traffic each day is a tremendous impact.
Even if the employer furnished the automobile and paid commuting costs – it’s a 25% pay cut, when you figure the number of hours per day for the salary.
That’s the factor that puts a “Get Ahead” Career in the proper perspective. If you are an employer , that earnings per hour can cut both ways.
