Feedburner and Google: The Walmart Effect in RSS
The confirmed purchase of Feedburner by Google has been strongly commented upon by several bloggers, including Tech Podcaster Todd Cochrane of GeekNewsCentral.
Todd’s comments – generally supportive of the individuals who founded Feedburner – sound the alarm at the concentration of commercial power and privacy concerns when the surfing, inquiry, feed subscription and ad click behavior are consolidated into a single entity.
When you combine it with the article yesterday on Microsoft Lab’s profiling that is already able to determine age and gender solely from traffic analysis, and you will see that the age of commercial Big Brother is seriously upon us.
I have been reading the Walmart Effect by Charles Fishman and am struck by the unintended consequences of Always Low Prices. The consequences on the economy, jobs, exports, environment, politics, workers, suppliers, investors, regulators and citizens are indeed profound. Yet the goal – Always Lower Prices – continues because that is what forty five years of Walmart DNA demands.
The convenience of Google – it’s powerful and undeniable realized potential for good – is very very real. But as it pursues, singlemindedly, it’s DNA encoded mission, the potential for evil and collateral damage is even more potent.
And that is saying a lot.
